What affects the cost
Surface material
Gravel cheapest, tarmac next, concrete and block paving mid-range, resin bound and permeable systems at the top.
Excavation depth
Vehicle-bearing build-ups need 200–300mm of excavation and compacted sub-base — deeper than most patios.
Drainage and planning
Over 5m² of new impermeable front surfacing needs permeable construction or run-off to a soakaway.
Dropped kerb
Council application, highways works and a licensed contractor — commonly £900–£2,500 and outside the driveway quote.
Existing surface
Breaking out old concrete costs substantially more to remove than gravel or soil.

- Choose tarmac or gravel if budget matters more than appearance; both perform well when laid properly.
- Confirm whether the price includes VAT, disposal and the dropped kerb, which are the three commonest gaps.
