What affects the cost
Turf quality
Pile height, density and yarn type range from around £12/m² to over £35/m². Cheap turf flattens and shines within two years.
Excavation depth
Typically 75–100mm dig-out for a compacted sub-base and laying course.
Shape complexity
Curves, borders and trees mean cutting, joining and waste — joins are the most visible failure point.
Edging system
Treated timber, composite or a concrete haunch to hold the perimeter and fix the turf.
Access and disposal
Turf comes in 2m or 4m wide rolls; no side access can mean cutting and joining more than necessary.
Regional pricing differences

Labour vs materials
Roughly 50% of this type of work is labour and 50% materials. Excavation, spoil disposal and base laying are the labour. Turf, membrane, aggregate and timber edging make up materials.
Common hidden costs
- Spoil removal — a 40m² lawn generates about 4 tonnes of soil.
- Silica sand infill, which some quotes leave out and which is needed to keep the pile upright.
- Pet-specific drainage layers and deodorising infill if you have dogs.
- Removing and reinstating existing edging, paths or a washing line base.
How to save money
- Choose a mid-range 30–35mm pile; the very cheapest and most expensive both disappoint on value.
- Design out curves — straight edges reduce cutting waste and joins.
- Combine with a patio project so excavation and disposal happen once.
- Check the manufacturer's warranty and UV guarantee, not just the installer's.
