Brick wall cost calculator

A brick wall is a structure, not a fence. Foundations, pier spacing and coping details are what make it stand for fifty years, and they are the items that separate a proper quote from a cheap one.

Length of wall. Assumes roughly 1.2m height — taller walls cost proportionally more.

12 linear metres

Broad trade availability keeps day rates near the national average.

What affects the cost

Height and thickness

Above about 1.2m a single-skin wall needs piers or a double-skin build, which roughly doubles material use.

Foundations

Concrete strip footing sized for the wall and ground conditions — deeper near trees or on clay.

Brick choice

Commons and stock bricks are far cheaper than handmade, reclaimed or specific facing bricks needed to match an older house.

Retaining or free-standing

A retaining wall needs engineering design, drainage behind and reinforcement — a different cost bracket entirely.

Copings and detailing

Brick-on-edge, precast or stone copings, plus movement joints on longer runs.

Regional pricing differences

Materials cost roughly the same everywhere in the UK; labour does not. Use the region selector above to apply a local index — London and the South East typically run 15–30% above the national average, while the North East, Northern Ireland and Yorkshire sit below it.

Labour vs materials

Roughly 60% of this type of work is labour and 40% materials. Bricklaying is skilled labour, typically 60% of cost. Bricks, blocks, concrete and copings make up the rest.

Common hidden costs

  • Excavation and disposal of foundation spoil.
  • Structural engineer's design where the wall retains ground or exceeds height limits.
  • Weep holes and land drainage behind retaining walls — omitted more often than you would expect.
  • Matching mortar colour and joint profile on an extension to an existing wall.

How to save money

  • Keep the wall under 1m where the design allows to avoid piers and engineering.
  • Use a facing brick on the visible side and blocks behind on double-skin walls.
  • Combine with other groundwork so foundation excavation happens once.
  • Ask for the foundation dimensions and brick name in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a brick wall cost per metre?

£220–£480 per linear metre for a 1.2m free-standing wall including foundations, in 2026.

Do I need planning permission for a garden wall?

Generally not below 2m, or 1m next to a highway. Retaining walls may need building regulations approval.

How long does a brick wall take to build?

A 12m garden wall typically takes 5–8 working days including foundations and curing.

Why do I need piers?

They provide lateral stability. A single-skin wall over about 1.2m without piers is not structurally sound.
